Gas Safe Register will replace CORGI gas registration in Northern Ireland on 1st April 2010.
Anyone carrying out work on gas after the 1 April 2010 must be on the Gas Safe Register. If not, they are breaking the law and could be putting you and your family at risk. Badly installed and poorly maintained gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.
How do I check if they are Gas Safe registered?
All registered engineers carry a Gas Safe Register ID card with their own unique licence number. Before you have any gas work carried out, always ask to see the card. Check both sides of the card to make sure the engineer is qualified for the work you want done and their qualifications are in date.
After the 1 April 2010 you can find or check a Gas Safe registered engineer in Northern Ireland at www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk or by phoning 0800 408 5500.
Why has gas registration changed?
On 1 April 2009, Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the gas registration body in Great Britain and Isle of Man. This followed an extensive review of gas safety by the Health and Safety Executive in GB. The Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSENI) carried out a similar review and consulted with the gas industry and public representative groups. The overwhelming opinion was to align gas safety with the GB scheme, Gas Safe Register, from 1st April 2010.
