CORFU VERDICT: Gas Safety Body Issues Travel Advice
Gas Safe Register is issuing gas safety advice for anyone going on holiday in the UK or abroad, following yesterday’s verdict on the tragic Corfu carbon monoxide deaths.
Christianne Shepherd, 7, and her brother Robert, 6, died in October 2006 after a faulty boiler leaked carbon monoxide into their holiday bungalow in Corfu. The two British holiday workers on trial for manslaughter were cleared last night over the deaths.
Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances can leak poisonous carbon monoxide (CO). Whether staying in a B&B, chalet, hotel, caravan or boat, when it comes to gas safety, holidaymakers are more vulnerable than when at home; they simply don’t know how often gas appliances have been safety checked or serviced by the owners.
Gas Safe Register urges holidaymakers to take a portable audible carbon monoxide alarm with them when they are away from home.
“Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous gas, and with no colour, taste or smell and it can kill quickly without warning. Taking an audible carbon monoxide alarm on holiday and knowing what signs to look out for could save lives.”
