Warning over Coleraine company's gas appliances

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

The HSE is advising anyone who had work done by George Brown of 'The Calor Shop' in Coleraine, to switch off all gas appliances

A warning has been issued to anyone who has had gas work carried out by a Coleraine company.

It follows a Health and Safety Executive investigation into the deaths of two Newtownabbey teenagers at an apartment in Castlerock last week.

The HSE is advising anyone who had work done by George Brown, trading as George Brown of 'The Calor Shop' in Coleraine, to switch off all gas appliances.

An emergency helpline has been set-up on 0800 0320 121.

'The Calor Shop' is an entirely separate legal entity to Calor Gas (NI) Limited.

On Tuesday, the HSENI said it had had a "strong response" to its emergency helpline number.

It said that more than "185 calls have been received so far from concerned members of the public".

It also said the helpline would operate from 0800 BST until midnight on Tuesday.

On Monday, the HSENI said a liquid petroleum gas appliance in the flat where the teenagers died was defective.

Aaron Davidson and Neil McFerran, both 18, died in a Tunnel Brae Court apartment last Tuesday following a suspected carbon monoxide leak.

Their friend, Matthew Gaw, survived.

HSENI said it was continuing to carry out checks in other premises in Castlerock and Coleraine.

The HSENI has asked that only members of the public with specific emergency safety concerns use the helpline.

Neil McFerran and Aaron Davidson were due to get exam results in a few weeks

In a statement on Monday, the safety body also issued some general advice and said anyone displaying any of the following symptoms - headache, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse, loss of consciousness, should seek medical help immediately.

They should also contact their local Gas Safe registered engineer and request a full gas safety check.

The HSENI also advised installing an audible carbon monoxide (CO) alarm as a further precautionary measure.

Why Service Your Boiler

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Why Service Your Boiler?

Because regular servicing helps keep your boiler running more efficiently, which in turn means that you use less fuel which saves you money. With most boiler manufacturers recommending that a service is carried out once a year, this also assists in preventing potential breakdowns which may leave you without heating.

As a registered business, with heating engineers based in Belfast and holding over £2,000 worth of spares in our fully stocked vehicles, we can ensure that most problems will be solved on site. Helping to prevent the need for any recall visits which can be expensive and inconvenient to our customers.

Why does my Oil burner trip the lockout button

Oil burner keeps tripping the lockout button?

The little red button on the box of the oil burner itself. If your oil burner stops running, the first thing you should check is the reset button. If you press it and the burner fires up then that was the problem. If the button should trip again then there is a fault and you should schedule a service/breakdown call immediately.

If the Burner fails to start, adopt the following procedure:-

  1. Check that there is oil in the tank and that the supply valve is open.
  2. Check that the water pump is operating and that the High Limit stat has not tripped.
  3. Check whether the Boiler Overheat light on the control fascia is glowing, if so it indicates an overheat situation. Press the Reset Button once the temperature has dropped sufficiently.
  4. Check whether the red Lockout indicator on the Control Panel and Burner Control box are glowing, this indicates that the Burner has attempted to start but has not fired successfully. Press the reset button on the Control box, when released, the lights will go out and the Burner will again attempt to start.

If the Burner does not run and again goes to lockout with red indicators glowing:-

  1. Wait three minutes.
  2. Repeat the procedure by pressing the button.
  3. Failure to start on the second attempt indicates a fault requiring attention.
  4. Switch off the mains supply and call your service engineer.

Do not keep resetting the button and ignoring the problem as you could be puting unburnt fuel into the combustion chamber and if does happen to start you could do more damage to the boiler unit and more importantly to yourself if it explodes.

Why does it trip?

It is a safety device. It shuts the burner down when it thinks there is a problem. Either there isn't a flame or the the photo cell sensor is faulty or there is an other part that is at fault causing the unit to trip, i.e. Motor, Pump or even running out of oil .

Gas Safe Register will replace CORGI gas registration in Northern Ireland on 1st April 2010.

Anyone carrying out work on gas after the 1 April 2010 must be on the Gas Safe Register. If not, they are breaking the law and could be putting you and your family at risk. Badly installed and poorly maintained gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.
